Some of us (most of us?) have been schooled heavily in how to be a giver.
Being the selfless giver has been held up as a virtue, something to strive for. I believe in giving and service; but what I was thinking about this morning was the balance between giving and receiving. A sacred balance.
Most women, myself included, were raised to believe we had to be mostly givers, that it is OK to receive, once all of our obligations and duties are met. Then we could have a little bit, or what's left over, for ourselves.
I think I may have had it backwards all these years; perhaps I should have been filling myself up first, then attending to my responsibilities and obligations.
I wrote this poem after pondering this idea of the sacred balance between giving and receiving:
Swallow, digest and rid yourself
of the “I got this” falsehood
The “I can do it myself” belief that drains your energy
leaving you tight, tense and tired
Let go of the need to always be the helper
at the expense of your tender and worthy heart
Draining your reserves and desires
Choose instead the sacred balance of divine reciprocity
Giving and receiving in Just and Perfect balance
Filling and replenishing your well of being
How might you open to, and ingest,
the care and affection of your lovers and supporters,
letting the seeds of Love feed and nourish your soul
Will you let yourself be enlivened
with the admiration and appreciation
that sparkles and flies all around you?
Can you honor your good heart and intentions,
your generosity and care for others ,
while also inviting Love to generously care for you too?
Yes, today might be a good day to balance the scales
To ponder what you need, to ask for and receive
what Life waits joyfully in the wings to give you.
What will fuel and feed your soul or ignite your spirit?
Just simply ask from your good heart
Knowing you don’t have to earn it,
there is nothing required of you but a ready openness
Today, allow the divine breeze that gently
taps at the door of your heart…to enter.
She comes speaking of self love & sacred balance
Breathe, receive, and let Her give to you
Wondering what your thoughts are...what do we need to consider, or adjust in our lives in order to have more of a sacred balance?
I appreciate your support; thanks for reading and commenting!
