How often have you been on the brink of a positive change or close to reaching an important goal and it strikes…FEAR…. the kind of fear that makes you doubt yourself, feel insecure, and keeps you stuck spinning your wheels? In business and in life, we all experience this type of fear at one time or another.
Fear that makes you doubt yourself and your abilities, the fear that tells lies about your capabilities and potential and generally can make you feel like turning back or giving up. But don’t because fear can be explored and understood with some reflection and inner work.
But first a little science, fear is not an emotion it is a process.
We “feel” fear in our bodies because of this process. Fear is a valuable built in self-protection system. (After all, when that wild animal really is bearing down on us, we had better run!)
The feeling we get when we are afraid is the result of the process of fear rather than being the process itself. The feeling part stems from the recognition of physical sensations due to the bodily changes; the increased heart rate, increased vigilance and arousal (known as hyper-vigilance and hyper-arousal), and general super-alertness and focus is the result of the chemicals norepinephrine and epinephrine which are released by the adrenal glands. These chemicals are responsible for mobilizing energy and preparing us to act upon a fear (freeze, fight or flight) and facilitate our safety and survival. Primarily, these chemicals are responsible for making as much energy available as possible for “fight or flight”.~ Simon Attwood
So why does fear rear its head when you are trying to move ahead, set goals or make important decisions? Your unique background and past experiences can trigger your fear responses.
To figure out where the fear is coming from you need to do some work to uncover what is happening. Try answering these questions about your fear:
When have you felt fear in your past and overcome it?
How do you feel when there is NO fear? Where does this strength (confidence) come from?
What will happen or fail to happen, if you don’t take this action?
These next 2 questions are meant to be answered together:
Start today by deciding to overcome just one fear and see what happens. Know that you can break barriers and be successful by reminding yourself what you have overcome in the past! And a bonus, practicing letting go of fears will build a muscle that says you can do it!
